The DMB Redwood City Saltworks team has worked with the community since June 2006 to collectively define a new future for the industrial Saltworks site. The Saltworks team has gained many insights from this community-based planning process, especially that Redwood City residents want the Saltworks to become a healthy community that balances preservation and restoration of the area's unique environment with a variety of community uses.

We've taken what we've learned from this listening process and created one guiding principle for our planners to take to heart: Create a balance of uses on the site.

Then, taking the specific details we heard from the community, we expanded this guiding principle into four planning goals that reflect the community's priority to create a balance of uses on the site. These goals are:

• Foster Diverse Uses - We will work to establish a mix of uses that meet the needs of a diverse population and contribute to the long-term vitality of Redwood City.
• Integrate Sustainability and Ecological Restoration - We will incorporate wetlands restoration and habitat creation with a community design that embraces renewable energy, water conservation and innovative green-building practices.
• Reconnect City, Site and Bay - Through connectivity and the creation of publicly accessible amenities, water-oriented recreation and other community uses, we will endeavor to make this industrial site and the Bay more meaningful parts of the city.
• Create Pedestrian and Transit-friendly Environments - Collaboratively, we will encourage transit linkages to Redwood City and create compact neighborhoods that are walkable and transit-oriented.

When we shared these goals with more than 200 residents at a recent planning workshop, they agreed that the goals reflected the aspirations of Redwood City residents.
